Infection Control and Sanitary Safety: Practical Guide for Center Staff

On September 8, 2026, the municipal non-profit enterprise «Center for Medical Rehabilitation and Palliative Care for Children “Vitryla Zhyttia”» held a specialized practical seminar for our multidisciplinary staff dedicated to modern infection control protocols pursuant to Order No. 1614 of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The seminar was presented by Center Head Nurse Maria Palamarchuk. The session focused on everyday multidisciplinary coordination: how educators, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, medical staff, and care assistants collaborate as a unified team to safeguard our vulnerable young patients.

Facility Specifics: Protecting Children with Complex Needs

Children receiving rehabilitation and palliative care at our Center often present with complex neurological and somatic conditions and compromised immune resistance. Common seasonal viral pathogens can cause severe clinical complications in this fragile population.

Moreover, developmental therapies require close tactile contact, specialized learning aids, speech probes, and sensory equipment. Every team member takes individual responsibility for infection prevention within their working environment.

Core Standards and Protocols in the Handout

• Golden Standard of Hand Hygiene: clear demarcation between soap washing (40–60 s for visible soiling) and alcohol rub (minimum 30 s and 3 ml rubbed until completely dry without wiping).
• 5 WHO Moments for Hand Hygiene: before patient contact, before clean/aseptic procedures, after body fluid exposure, after touching the patient, and after contact with patient surroundings.
• Disinfection of Toys and Developmental Aids: 4-step workflow (Cleaning → Disinfection → Rinsing → Drying) tailored to plastic, wood, and fabric materials.
• Room and Equipment Safety: autoclave sterilization of speech probes, rapid-acting disinfection for sensory dry pools and tactile modules, post-patient disinfection of physical therapy couches.
• Medical Waste Management: strict sorting of Category A household waste and Category B hazardous bio-waste in yellow labeled bags.
• Action Plan for Ill Pupils: 4-step protocol: Isolation → Medical notification → Parent contact → Room sanitation (with strict prohibition of self-medication).
